We’re having a kids writing contest. Here are all the details!

Rules of Contest

Rules of Entry

1. Plot Duckies is accepting original short stories written by students, grades ranging from Kindergarten through Grade 6.

2. Stories must be written solely by the student; however, the student may receive help with formatting, typing, scribing, copyediting, and uploading.

3. All entries must be attached to, or link included in, an email sent to this email address:

by 6 p.m. on Friday, October 23, 2020.

4. Please put “Plot Duckies Story Contest” on the subject line of the email.

5. Stories may be submitted in any of the following formats:

-A Shared Google Doc file
-Google Slides

6. In the email, all entries must include the student’s name, grade, school, parent(s) name, mailing address, and phone number.

7. Submitting a story to this contest constitutes permission to publish the story on the Plot Duckies website including the student’s name, grade, and school. The winners will also display their story covers on Plot Duckies social media.

8. Plot Duckies will confirm receipt of each entry within 24 hours.

9. Plot Duckies will announce the winners on Saturday, October 31, 2020 on the Plot Duckies website.

10. Only one submission per student.

Rules on the Stories

1. Stories should be between 500 and 2,000 words.

2. All stories must be accompanied by a cover with art created by the student either by hand or using free graphic design resources like

3. Stories may be in any genre. 

4. Stories must contain a beginning, middle, and end.

5. Stories must contain a main character, a villain or obstacle of some kind, and a helper who tries to aid the main character.

6. Characters do not have to be people.

How Stories will be Judged

1. Stories will be judged based on the criteria in these rules:

-the creativity and likability of the main character
-the originality of the obstacle and resolution
-overall readability of the story

Prizes and Winners

1. Three winners will be chosen: (All submissions were from 6th graders, so we’ve changed up the awards so we can send three winners some prizes!)

-one First Place winner from Grades 4-6

-one Second Place winner from Grades 4-6

-one Overall Grand Prize winner – Grand Prize is sponsored by Ayanna Denise Skin!

2. Each winner will receive a certificate, $20 in cash, and have their story published on the Plot Duckies website and announced in Plot Duckies social media.
